Crochet Team!
How it started:
Crochet has become a meaningful commitment for me! Initially, it started from a light-hearted reason: I wanted to socialize with my friends while staying productive!
I found crocheting a perfect fit for what I wanted—enjoying my time and not feeling as if it was wasted. The feeling of pride and accomplishment from seeing a neatly woven blanket after long hours is indescribable; it keeps me motivated to crochet more.
Week after week, crocheting with my group of friends from church, we were soon surrounded by a pile of blankets, each designed differently.
What should we do with these blankets in this hot summer? While absorbed in thought, the call I never wanted to pick up was ringing in the living room.
“Your friend is in the hospital, unconscious,” said my mom.
When we decided to visit the hospital, I picked up one blanket from the pile laid on the church table—to deliver my warmth and care interwoven in every stitch of the blanket.
I did not get to see him, but I saw something else: patients who need the warmth in this heated weather.
Ever since then, my friends and I have packaged the blankets and handwritten letters for donations.
A single hospital visit has sprouted into multiple visits. The blankets are no longer piled, untouched on the table, but are instead reaching those in need.
Now, the immense warmth and broad smiles just make me want to crochet more and more to sustain that smile in whoever receives our blankets!
Donation to Bergen County Department
Donation:
At first, I was light-hearted. Pulling out my favorite colors, sky blue and yellow yarns, I crocheted my blanket little by little while talking with my friends. It felt nice to hang out while feeling productive.
But things totally changed after my first blanket delivery to cancer patients. When my soft blanket gently touched the dry souls standing lonely on the doorstep to an unknown world, an indescribable force hit me so hard.
Ever since then, I pulled out pink for breast, gold for children, teal for ovarian, and gray for brain cancer patients—with purpose. My feelings from the delivery couldn’t rest, but had to be heard through word-for-word promotion to other ministries as well as blogs on our website.
Now, I add meaning to every thread of my blanket.
